29 Hindenberg Strasse in 2003

Pat O’Sullivan took this photograph of the old wartime POW accommodation in Bad Schmiedeberg when he visited the village for the first time since 1945, in 2003. Marked out on it by him is the ‘escape route’ upstairs to the coal merchant’s house taken by Pte Tom Tunney and Dvr Benny Lewis on April 13th 1945, just before the other POWs were marched away. Pat remembers that the two men’s escape was common knowledge with the other POWs--indeed, Pat remembers he had to be woken up and shifted from his bunk to let them get to the adjacent window frame!

NEXT: the Bad Schmiedeberg British POWs marching in the Street, 1943-44.
