This photograph of Evan Darlington, standing at sixth from the left, and several fellow POW escapers (plus one local girl!) was taken in the Italian hills sometime before or after after his escape from Camp PG 46 in September 1943. None of the other POWs in the photograph have been identified so far, but it is known that at least one of them was a South African.

Courtesy Roy Mills.Roy told me that the story that came down to him was that the photo was taken after Evan’s escape in September 1943. However, given the fact that he reached Switzerland very shortly afterwards it seems much more likely that the photo was taken during his time working on an Italian POW farm work camp prior to his escape

NEXT: an envelope with the address of Evan’s Swiss internment camp.
