1161 344 Latheron, Pte Kenneth, S/150509, RASC. From Co Durham. Author of the book Just Another Country Boy and an Unwilling Guest of Hitler. The book is freely available online as a pdf file at: http://www.latherons.co.uk/dad/book/JACB.pdf
|
Captured May/June 1940. In the book Latheron states that his POW number was assigned at Schokken in 1940, see page 24, before he was sent to 'Fort 8' at Posen. He was later assigned to work camp E 155, a paper mill factory at Cosel Hafen through to 8/44, see page 49. 'One great thing about working in the paper factor was that we never ran short of toilet rolls.....' This observation on page 62 is noteworthy:. 'When the horse boxes carrying the Jews and their families to Auschwitz passed through Cosel the doors were open. The people in the boxes seemed to be unaware of the fate in store and they seemed quite cheerful.' Took part in the 'Long March' from Lamsdorf from 1/45.
