James Shackleton and Fellow 70th Field Regt RA Sgts

The above photograph includes James Shackleton at left middle row, marked in blue ink, Harry Hebb at right middle, John Wise at left front and five of their NCO colleagues. These were the eight No 1 Sergeants of the eight guns of 279 Battery, 70th Field Regiment in 1942. Sgt Leonard ‘Briggsy’ Briggs, at right front, was in D Troop, 279 Battery and is remembered as already being a sergeant at the time of James Shackleton’s enlistment in 1939.
