Lt Charles William ‘Bill’ Duck was the platoon officer of 15 Platoon, C Company, 16th Battalion DLI from at least mid-1941 until his death in action during the Battle of Sedjenane in March 1943. From Sunderland, Lt Duck was granted an Emergency Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant (Personal Number 189530) in the Durham Light Infantry on 31/5/40 and was promoted to War Substantive Lieutenant on 1/10/42. HIs signature can be seen on the troopship Staffordshire’s 1942 Christmas dinner officers’ menu and in various of my father’s letters and cards home in early 1943 (platoon officers had to check and if necessary censor their men’s mail). See the Letters and Documents section of the site. Photograph courtesy of Lt Duck’s cousin, Isabel Everson, via Charles Everson.
