252808 4A Pinner, Rfn Frederick Charles, 9698522. 9th Bn Rifle Brigade. Captured south of Sidi Barani, Libya 25/6/42. Of 6 Pollard St, Bethnal Green, London, E 2. POW at workcamp 4F Arbeitskommando F57, Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, Freiberg from 10/43. His 1945 returned POW questionaire detailed serious mistreatment of the POWs allegedly overseen by the mine's director, a Herr Schievelbusch and this was the basis of a subsequent war crimes investigation: 'Used armed force to make prisoners work, which was considered as war work. Consistently reducing rationing to a minimum. Threatened that not one POW would leave Germany as he would burn us in the lager or shoot us. Persistently using a revolver to make men work, then resorted to brutality by using a rubber truncheon for no apparent reason. As time went on the more liberties and crimes increased right up to the day the camp was evacuated to south Germany. This man is a perfect menace. He was also assisted by: Works manager, Herr Wildraut, Herr Phieffer, Herr Gieber, Herr Gursky, Stabsfeldwebel Prasse.' Quoted from an original document passed on to me by Phil Knott.
